Where is God in all of this? This is the question we wrestle with as the saga of Genesis comes to an end. Joseph is reconciled with his brothers and with his father after years apart. The brothers had done a horrible thing, selling Joseph into slavery, never knowing if he was dead or alive. And when they were reunited Joseph had become one of incredible power – the power to kill them, or to enslave them, and yet Joseph forgave them and welcomed them. Rather than death, Joseph saw life. God was working through him and his family for a purpose larger than they could imagine, forcing life and newness through their actions. We cannot always see the bigger picture, but underneath it all is God’s mercy and justice moving all things towards life and wholeness.
