“King Herod heard about this…” Jesus has sent the disciples out in pairs to share the good news of the gospel and Herod on his seat of power heard about it, was threatened, and became fearful of the Jesus movement. We are sent then into a call back to John the Baptist’s arrest and execution. On either side of the story there is movement towards the Kingdom of God. Disciples are sent, 5,000 are fed with a few loaves and some fish. So goes the work of God; goodness and newness often interrupted with resistance. This Sunday we examine the Christian life generous in its commitment to sharing the good news yet sure to meet resistance. We also celebrate and commission those Youth and Adults headed to Eastern Kentucky to volunteer with Appalachian Service Project.
