Questions of Faith
For this first in our brief series in “Questions of Faith” we will wrestle with the question of “Why are we Christian?” using two New Testament texts. The first, from Philippians is thought to be among the earliest of Christian Hymns, serving the dual purpose of singing, and as a statement of faith. It is the Apostle Paul’s effort to answer both the WHY and and HOW of being a follower of Jesus Christ. The second text is a parable spoken by Jesus when his authority was questioned by religious elites. It is a parable challenging traditional assumptions about WHO will enter the Kingdom of God. In this sermon I will ask another question: It is one thing to confess and to believe in Jesus, but do we believe in the things that Jesus believed in? How we answer this question may be the answer to WHY we are Christian.
