SUMMARY:Third Sunday of Easter: Touch and See
DESCRIPTION:Last week the Gospel lesson emphasized seeing; today the focus is on touching. Jesus is trying to ground the disciples’ faith in the reality of his presence\, in the concreteness of his being. He told them to touch him; he ate in front of them. He was announcing that he was real. Our lives are still being touched; our hearts are still being touched by Jesus. It is also Native American Ministries Sunday. Through prayers and litanies\, we will hope to bridge the gap between our Native American brothers and sisters. This is part of what it means to touch and see. Touch another tradition; touch another perspective; take hold of something that takes you out of yourself long enough to embrace the realities of another’s existence. Overcoming racism is an ongoing process of education and a constant reminder that embracing those of a difference race or ethnicity involves stretching ourselves and our practices to include and embrace diversity. We are challenged by our bishops to continue the task of ending racism in us and in our society. Let us worship with open hearts and open minds.

SUMMARY:Manna: Young Adult Ministry
DESCRIPTION:Join Manna\, our weekly meetup for young adults in their 20s and 30s! In the Bible\, Manna represents God arriving to a people who were yet discovering who they were. Manna was God’s provision. Manna was God’s way of teaching a people how to live and be together. Manna was preparing them for the journey ahead. Our Wednesday nights are like Manna! They are a time to study scripture\, talk about current events\, pray together and discover who God is shaping us to be for the journey ahead. Pastor Matt Weiler leads the group in conversation and reflection on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Locations vary\, please contact Matt at mweiler@umc-kzo.org for more information and to join the group email list. \n

SUMMARY:Wednesday Morning Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Join us for yoga and prayer on Wednesday mornings at 8am via Zoom. This yoga is for every-body. It is most often a gentle session that stretches our bodies and reminds us to breathe. Through this practice we prepare ourselves mind\, body and spirit for our coming Sunday morning worship with the reading of Scripture and prayers. This is a video led session from popular yoga websites. Pastor Julie Kline has been a yoga fan for decades\, but is not a certified yoga instructor\, thus we follow the wisdom of those who are certified. If you are interested in learning more and getting connected to this class email Pastor Julie at jkline@umc-kzo.org.

SUMMARY:Sunday Morning Class: The Challenge of Paul
DESCRIPTION:The Challenge of Paul: How to Make a Just World \nOur exploration of Paul resumes with this DVD-based series featuring John Dominic Crossan. Traditional Christian notions about the relationship between God and Justice have tended to convey that God will ultimately reward the good and punish the bad. Each one of us has engaged in thinking that she or he would like to provide God a list of those who deserve to be punished\, preferably the sooner the better. Crossan\, in his inimical way\, turns such old ideas upside down. He insists that to understand Paul’s teaching on the “justice of God\,” we consider two traditions: first\, we must look to the Prophets of Israel and historical Jesus; second\, we must look to first century Roman understanding of how to make a just world. John Clark will lead the discussion. \nCLICK HERE to join this conversation on Sunday mornings at 11am.\nMeeting ID: 814 7426 2215 Passcode: godslove

SUMMARY:Second Sunday of Easter: Unless I See
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us for Coffeehouse Worship! \n“Thomas\, one of the twelve\, was not with them when Jesus came. So\, the other disciples told him\, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them\, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands\, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side\, I will not believe.” \nOur theme for worship this week is Thomas and his need to see something real before his belief can kick in. If we are truthful\, we all want that. We all find it easier to believe when we can see something. So\, then this will be a worship that celebrates showing. We will show the gospel at work in people’s lives. We show the difference it makes in how we live each day. We show a motivating hope that keeps joy at work in the community of faith. Today we show our story\, our own people\, our mission and service. There are stories to tell\, even during this time of pandemics. Hope rises and clings ahold even in difficult situations\, most especially in difficult situations. Faith is alive\, let us hear the stories\, tell the stories and create the stories that show God’s love being shared.

SUMMARY:Good Friday: Healed and Still Healing
DESCRIPTION:Online Worship @ 6pm\nIn person Anointing & Prayers at the Cross @ 7-8pm at FUMC \nWe invite you to continue in Holy Week Worship on Good Friday\, this time\, “staying with” Jesus in his moment of suffering. The temptation is always for us to move to Easter Resurrection quickly as possible\, and this may be ever more true in a year of global pandemic. Lingering in places of suffering is something many of us are all too familiar with. Yet\, Jesus stays with us in our suffering\, and asks us to stay with him in his suffering. Join us online at 6pm for a Good Friday liturgy where we will listen to the passion narrative from Matthew’s Gospel\, sing some classic Good Friday hymns\, and be given opportunity to lay our places of pain\, grief\, and forgiveness before the Cross of Jesus\, and receive anointing with oil. For those who are comfortable and able\, there will be a time to worship in-person\, outdoors at 7pm where worshipers can lay griefs and prayers on the cross\, and be anointed by the pastors. Let us stay with Jesus in his suffering\, knowing that he is always with us in ours. \nEvents taking place at church will be located on the lawn off the parking lot. As with previous outdoor events\, masks and social distancing are required and we will not have use of the bathrooms.

SUMMARY:Palm Sunday: Holy\, Wholly
DESCRIPTION:We have seen that the stories of Jesus’ healing ministry are filled words and deeds. Our ability to forgive ourselves and others is the foundation that can transform infirmities and allow us to move on. We integrate our beliefs and actions for the health of the whole. The parade of compassionate power we celebrate today is underscored by a story of transformation\, symbolizing our ability to fuel our movement of recovery. We glorify God for beautiful words and works of wholeness and share that treasured beauty with others. We know there will still be pain\, but we also know love will win. \nSharing with Our Community Leaders: Dr. Charlae Davis\, ISAAC

SUMMARY:Fifth Sunday of Lent: Restoration
DESCRIPTION:In the season of Lent\, we often focus on our spiritual health and how we might expand it or rather just nurture it with more intention\, so that we may be prepared to celebrate the resurrection\, the new life that is possible as we embrace the ways of love that Christ has taught us. For this season of Lent\, we continue our “season of recovery” as we focus on wholistic health as essential to our spiritual lives. The demands of following Jesus are great. He shows us that sometimes we must make extraordinary efforts to move in a new direction. As we consider the health of humanity\, we cannot ignore the need to heal the very planet that sustains us. We live in increasing chaos of a beleaguered environment and the hoarding of resources. We want to be “saved” by something or someone else\, but we discover this week that we are in the boat with the One who shows us our power to turn it around\, to calm the storm. We protect the jewel that is our home\, restoring something beautiful from scars of the past. We focus on the importance of recovery of environmental health\, reclaiming our sense of who we are and being able to proclaim new redemptive stories of divine worth. \nSharing with our Community Leaders: Rev. SUMMARY:Fourth Sunday of Lent: The Beauty of Mosaic
DESCRIPTION:Prolonged times of difficulty can impede our ability to stay creative. The picture of our lives is dulled and hope for a brighter future can fade. We need a touch of inspiration to awaken us from our sleep\, as we hear in one of this week’s healing stories. We also awaken to our agency to seek out the Divine Healer\, reaching out to touch the power we know can restore our intellect and imagination. We emerge ready to re-engage with the world\, seeking and seeing solutions\, creating different pictures of life renewed just as a mosaic artist creates beauty from broken pieces of glass. \nSharing with our Community Leaders: Dr. Sue Ellen Christian

SUMMARY:Third Sunday of Lent: Truth Telling for Healing
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever walked along the shores of Lake Michigan or another body of water and picked up stones as the waves lap across them? Perhaps you’ve been lucky enough to find a piece of glass that has been tumbled through the waters. When you pick these objects up\, do you ever wonder what their story might be? Fossilized stones are particularly intriguing and what was that piece of glass before it became just a piece? There are stories that have shaped our lives\, leaving us without the ability to see who we truly are in the eyes of God and leaving us without the ability to speak the depth of our stories of struggle. We focus on the importance of recovery of mental health\, reclaiming our sense of who we are and being able to proclaim new redemptive stories of divine worth. We welcome Rev. Cara Weiler to our time of worship\, who serves as a Deacon partnered with our church and with Communities In Schools of Kalamazoo. She will share with us the work of Communities In Schools and the influence they have on the mental health of many. It is a communion Sunday\, please bring juice and bread to your worship space if you are able. Let us experience\, celebrate and share God’s love. \nOn Sunday\, March 7\, we will offer communion in the parking lot from 12:30-1:30pm. We will use both driveways as entrance ways. Pastor Julie and Pastor Matt will be at one of the driveways to offer you communion. Please stay in your cars\, with masks on and they will serve you in your vehicle. Please join us in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup\, remembering that we are the bread and the love freely poured out in the world in the name of the Christ who redeems.

DESCRIPTION:God gathers us as a Beachcomber gathers and marvels at every precious surviving piece of beach glass she finds. We are never alone\, we are never lost to the One who seeks humanity’s wholeness. We affirm our commitment to be the Body of Christ that knows we cannot be personally healed until we see the interconnected community as part of the process of healing. Jesus has the power to re-vision the family of God in which false boundaries are overcome. In a year of devastating loss of livelihood\, we consider the economic health that reimagines status quo. \nOn Ash Wednesday\, many of you received a piece of beach glass for our prayer time during Lent. If you did not receive a piece of glass and have one in your home\, please bring it to your worship space. If you do not have beach glass\, please find a small stone for your contemplation during prayer time. \nSharing from Community Leaders: Katie McPherson\, Building Blocks

SUMMARY:First Sunday of Lent: We are Treasure
DESCRIPTION:Each of us is created a precious and holy vessel of embodied love. We have been through a harrowing time since last Lent that has shattered our sense of wholeness–body\, mind and spirit–like a glass vessel fractured into pieces. Let us enter a Lenten “season of recovery” as we focus on Jesus\, the Healer of our every ill. Beach glass begins as something whole and yet discarded. As it is tumbled by the sea\, it is broken and polished until it becomes a treasured “mineral gem.” We do not embrace that suffering is necessary or God-given\, but that suffering is a part of life. When pain comes and brokenness enters our lives\, Jesus reaches out to touch and remind us of the Treasure that we all are–worthy of new life in the midst of hopelessness. In a year when pandemic has wreaked havoc on our world\, we begin by affirming our journey to physical health. On Ash Wednesday\, many of you received a piece of beach glass for our prayer time during Lent. If you did not receive a piece of glass and have one in your home\, please bring it to your worship space. If you do not have beach glass\, please find a small stone for your contemplation during prayer time. \nSharing from Community Leaders: Dr. Grace Lubwama\, YWCA Kalamazoo

SUMMARY:Ash Wednesday: Shattered
DESCRIPTION:All music is included in the bulletin\, but will not always be on screen\, so we recommend printing the bulletin (linked below) in advance as you’re able. \nAsh Wednesday is a time of naming brokenness. As we enter the season of Lent\, we commit to enter also into a season of healing and recovery that requires the naming of what has been shattered as a first step. We take “the yoke” of responsibility as disciples of Jesus to be the Body of Christ–a body of those who need healing and offer healing in the world. The promise of Jesus is that he is with us in our weariness and burdens. \n“Come to me\, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens\, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you\, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart\, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy\, and my burden is light.” – Matthew 11: 28-30

SUMMARY:It'll All Make Sense On the Other Side of Easter
DESCRIPTION:This weekend in worship we celebrate Transfiguration Sunday\, that great moment when Jesus is illuminated on the mountain\, and voice of God speaks saying\, “This is my son\, the beloved…” while Moses and Elijah minister to him. Moses is the embodiment of all the law and Elijah is the embodiment of all the prophets. This moment serves to affirm that Jesus will be the fulfillment then of all the law and all the prophets. But let’s not forget about the disciples who in that moment saw Jesus like they had never seen him before…a real mountaintop moment. It raises the question “What are some moments you have seen Jesus like never before?” When all when was finished Jesus told them not to say anything until after his resurrection. Why? Because some things only make sense this side of Jesus’ resurrection. Which raises another question. “What are some things that only make sense because of Jesus’ resurrection?” Also\, this Sunday in worship we celebrate Kaden Seals’ Baptism! So grab a cup of coffee and join us!

SUMMARY:Rising & Looking to a New Horizon
DESCRIPTION:As the Gospel of Mark continues to unfold in the first chapter\, the Gospel writer maintains in his direct and uncomplicated style. In the healing story for today\, Jesus simply “raises her up.” Simon’s mother-in-law had been bedridden and Jesus comes to her takes her hand\, lifts her up\, heals her and “she began to serve.” This Sunday is the last of our series “Rhythms of the Soul: Rising & Looking to a New Horizon.” We are joined by Michigan folk artist and social justice activist May Erlewine who will share her song “Shine On.” The Scripture of the day and May’s song will stir our souls\, inspiring us to find ways that we may be light bearers who believe in the healing power of love as we serve the world.
