SUMMARY:Manna
DESCRIPTION:Young Adults are invited to gather with Pastor Matt Weiler and Mandakini Brophy most Tuesday evenings at 6:30pm in the Youth Lounge (located on the lower level of First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo) for “Manna.” In the Bible\, Manna represents God arriving to a people who were yet discovering who they were. Manna was God’s provision. Manna was God’s way of teaching a people how to live and be together. Manna was preparing them for the journey ahead. Our Tuesday nights are like Manna! They are a time to study scripture\, talk about current events\, pray together and discover who God is shaping us to be for the journey ahead. Email Pastor Matt Weiler at mweiler@umc-kzo.org to learn more.

SUMMARY:Fourth Sunday of Easter: Who Lives\, Who Dies\, Who Tells Your Story
DESCRIPTION:The message for May 8 is called “Who Lives\, Who Dies\, Who Tells Your Story?” (Credit to Lin Manuel Miranda…) We’ll reflect on the 23rd Psalm in song form and we’ll hear a story of resurrection from the book of Acts. With the Psalm we are reminded of God’s presence in the shadows and even to death. With the story from Acts\, we know the good news that God’s love is more powerful than death. As we find ourselves now in the Fourth Sunday of Easter this particular story of resurrection speaks to God’s concern for the most vulnerable\, and even more\, we’ll discover how God resurrects the stories of the vulnerable and the marginalized far beyond our physical lives. The Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) will also celebrate the coming ordination of Heather McDougal with the gift of a new stole to be worn in worship\, and as this is a Coffeehouse Sunday\, our Change the World offering will go towards the good work with vulnerable woman at our local YWCA. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated mask practice. \nWorship note: To give a visual for this morning’s reading from Acts about Tabitha (aka Dorcas)\, the Coffeehouse Planning Team opted to place handmade items that represent ways persons have been offered similar compassion in our midst. There is a prayer quilt\, tied by members of a church to represent prayers being offered for someone with cancer\, and there are prayer shawls\, made by needleworkers in this congregation\, to wrap persons in love going through difficult times. We also were offered shawls made and gifted “just because” to offer the message of love to friends and family. These tangible gifts are one of the many ways love and care may be offered to those in our midst. Just as Tabitha offered herself\, consider all the ways that we may do this for one another and for our community. If you are interested in making prayer shawls for our Caring Committee\, please contact Robin at rentenman@umc-kzo.org.

SUMMARY:Third Sunday of Easter: Celebrating Stephen Ministry
DESCRIPTION:“When they had gone ashore\, they saw a charcoal fire there\, with fish on it\, and bread. Jesus said to them\, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” ~John 21: 9-10 \n“Come and have breakfast” the resurrected Christ invites the disciples to a meal of fish and bread on the shore of the Sea of Galilee. A meal is the setting for the reunion following the death of Jesus. It is just as it had happened so often in their life together\, they were breaking bread and fellowshipping with one another. It was a fitting context for Jesus to invite his followers into a deeper invitation to follow him and hear the commission to feed and care for God’s people. We will celebrate our Stephen Ministers in worship and invite people to consider joining the Stephen Ministry Team. Just as the disciples were invited to receive grace and forgiveness from the risen Christ\, we too are invited to commune with Jesus with a meal of bread and juice. If you are worshipping from home\, we invite you to find communion elements that you have in your home. Let us to worship together and share God’s love. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated mask practice. \n

SUMMARY:Second Sunday of Easter: Hi. Hello. Hey there.
DESCRIPTION:We are now in Eastertide on this Second Sunday of Easter and our scripture this week takes us to the upper room\, on the evening of Jesus’s resurrection. While every Sunday is a “little resurrection” it is always helpful and important to remember that Easter is not one day\, rather Easter is a Season of 50 days leading up to Pentecost. And so in our worship we continue this week in our Easter celebration in the liturgy\, the hymns and the sermon remembering that wonder-filled moment when Jesus came to the disciples in their fear and said\, “Peace be with you.” When has Jesus met you with peace in your places of fear? \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. SUMMARY:Fifth Sunday of Lent: Finding Your Mystic\, Listening Beyond the Voices
DESCRIPTION:We often have a “cast of characters” living inside our heads that love to carry on endless conversations–each from their own perspective. The chatter of our minds can sometimes keep us from a deeper listening and it is often difficult to understand what is a mystical connection to God. Getting our True Self into the chairperson’s seat in the committee meeting does not mean ignoring those voices of fear\, pessimism\, people-pleasing or accusation\, but instead listening intently to them and not letting them bully us into negative action. Letting them in and letting them go is the prayer of the mystic within. \nWe will celebrate communion this Sunday. For those joining us for worship online\, please bring bread and juice to your home worship space. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.

SUMMARY:Fourth Sunday of Lent: Finding Your Power\, Listening to Healing
DESCRIPTION:This week in worship we hear the story of an unnamed woman and a man named Jairus. Both are desperate. Jairus has wealth\, and power\, and access. The unnamed woman has none of those things. Both come to Jesus in prayer seeking healing. The woman for herself\, while the man\, Jairus\, for his daughter. As we find ourselves listening to this story now in the fourth week of Lent\, our task is to stand with Jesus and the disciples in the space between these two humans’ suffering and listen to their stories. In listening\, perhaps we’ll hear our own stories as well. Join us as we continue the Lenten journey of listening. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. SUMMARY:Second Sunday of Lent: Listening to Our Bodies & Finding Our Breath
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to the sacred text that connects our own aliveness with the breath of God. Together let us “pray without ceasing” as we pay attention to our breathing and believe that breathing is prayer. God blew breath into us at creation\, and we continue to breathe all of creation in and out of our bodies constantly. The early church also believed that breath and Spirit were one in the same. As we sigh\, let us join our breath with the Spirit that beckons us to the deep and promises to join us in spaces of love that work together to believe in a God breathed life for all. Come\, spirit\, come\, and let us rise on your wings. \nFor the March Mission of the Month we will be taking a special Change the World offering this Sunday to help support Sunnyside UMC’s Community Garden. During the service\, those attending in person will be asked to come forward and offer their gifts. If you would like to donate online\, you may do so on our website. \nAdditional resources: The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices. \nWorship note: Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday\, March 14 at 2am! Make sure to set your clocks forward one hour.

SUMMARY:First Sunday of Lent: Listening Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes we just need to get away in order to hear from that “still small voice” within. This quiet voice is an attribute of the Holy Living God\, as Elijah found out when he retreated to a cave where he expected to experience God in big wind and earthquake and fire. What is your “cave?” What place– perhaps a park\, a path\, a rocking chair\, a shoreline– and what practice–such as walking\, journaling\, reading\, or making art–helps you get quiet enough for long enough so you can hear past the chaos and into the depths of your life? This Lent we will quiet things down and heighten our attention to the “still\, small voice” of God and our own true self. Listening through prayer as well as meditation on sacred texts is an ancient Lenten practice. So\, let us come and rest\, come and listen. \nWe will celebrate communion this Sunday. For those joining us for worship online\, please bring bread and juice to your home worship space. \nAdditional resources: The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. SUMMARY:Finding Your Life: Listening Deeply
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for our 40-day journey of Lent\, we “turn around” (the root meaning of the word “repent”) from the distractions of daily noise and focus our attention on listening in a deeper way. Writer Parker Palmer suggests we must listen “to what our life is telling us”–in other words\, to listen to the deep wisdom God gave to us as a birthright\, connecting to God’s purpose once again. \nAdditional resources: The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. SUMMARY:Seeing the Glory
DESCRIPTION:On this Sunday we climb the mountain with the disciples\, Peter\, James and John\, to see the glory of Christ revealed and the truth affirmed that Jesus is the Son of God. Transfiguration Sunday plays an important and pivotal role in our journey of discipleship just as it did for the disciples then. On this day\, seeing Christ’s glory we will sing of the glory of God and give praise. This “mountain top” experience will prepare for a new trajectory that begins on Ash Wednesday\, when we turn our hearts and minds towards Jesus’s journey to the cross of crucifixion during the season of Lent. But for now\, on this day\, we’ll linger with the disciples up on the mountain seeing and praising Jesus in all his glory. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. SUMMARY:Be Still and Know
DESCRIPTION:Be still before God. Wait patiently. Are these passive words? Or reserved actions? The Hebrew of God’s command to “be still” is similar to stop what you are doing and know me. Be still\, so that you may be emptied and then filled with God. Stop praying and be prayer\, allow God to pray through you. Allow God to be in your head\, your heart and live through you. Be still. It is not passive. It is receiving\, filling and then turning to fulfill love. As we worship together and baptize a child of God\, let us remember that God claims us\, helps\, and protects us and loves us too. This is comfort for the soul. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.

SUMMARY:To Stand Grounded
DESCRIPTION:This week in worship\, we continue to find comfort in the wisdom and hope of the Psalms\, looking to Psalm 1. Central to this ancient poem is the image of a healthy fruit-bearing tree\, planted by the water; an image likened to those whose lives are grounded not in the messaging of popular consumer culture\, rather\, in the word and the law of God. Psalm 1\, a preamble of sorts to the entire book of Psalms assures the reader that God’s desire is for us to prosper and to thrive\, as the fruit bearing tree. On this Coffeehouse Sunday we’ll ponder the notion that “We were made to more than just survive\, we were made to thrive…” and ask the question\, “How is God leading me to prosper and thrive in this time?” Those in the sanctuary will be invited to write responses on a paper ribbon and hang them on the tree to reflect the imagery of the Psalm. Home worshipers are encouraged to have paper and pencil ready for journaling during this time of worship. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. SUMMARY:Steadfast Love
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday we receive a song of thanksgiving that brings comfort to our soul as our spirit finds union with the Divine. God offers a steadfast love that is consistent and constant\, and we find ourselves turning to receive with hearts of gratitude. It is a practice that needs to be cultivated in our lives. It is a journey that restores and renews our courage and compassion each time we attune ourselves to the love of God. On this Sunday\, in the bleak mid-winter let us find the holy ground of gratitude as we participate in the ritual of Holy Communion. If you are worshipping from home\, please prepare elements of communion\, bread and juice\, crackers and water\, even cereal and milk. It is the receptive heart that God most desires. Let us experience God’s steadfast love. \nWe will celebrate communion this Sunday. For those joining us for worship online\, please bring bread and juice to your home worship space. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. SUMMARY:Comfort for the Soul: Shelter Me
DESCRIPTION:“I will look back in days to come and realize your faithfulness has led me home. Within your house I’ll find my peace\, trusting that in your mercy you have sheltered me.” \nFrom “Shelter Me” by Father Michael Joncas \nThis Sunday we are beginning a spinoff of sorts of our traditional New Year Rhythms of the Soul series. Where in the past we have developed themes from popular music (old and new)\, this year we are looking to the Psalms for comfort and refuge while singing music to accompany the Psalms. Entering the third year of the pandemic with a current uptick in infections has left many with continued feelings of isolation\, grief\, abandonment and just plain old sadness and frustration. The Psalms provide us with words to pray through each of these experiences. This week’s text\, Psalm 71\, reminds us that God is a refuge to be trusted\, a rock and a fortress. Along with the Psalm\, we will sing “Shelter Me” written at the beginning of the pandemic by Father Michael Joncas. “Shelter Me” mirrors the sentiment of Psalm 71 as well as the 23rd Psalm\, and reminds us of God’s presence in our past and God’s faithfulness in our future. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.
