SUMMARY:Sunday Worship Service June 21: The One Who Hears
DESCRIPTION:As we gather for worship this Sunday\, we come carrying questions\, wounds\, and stories that do not always make sense. In the story of Hagar\, Ishmael\, and Abraham\, we encounter pain\, uncertainty\, and the cries of those who have been cast aside. Yet even in the wilderness\, God hears. Even in places of sorrow and struggle\, God sees\, God listens\, and God remains present. So come as you are with your doubts\, your grief\, your hope\, and your longing. Come ready to listen for the voices that cry out\, to bring before God the burdens we carry\, and to trust that in every desert place\, God is making a way. Let us worship the One who hears\, who sees\, and who stays with us always.

Her life was of service to others and she left her mark on the hearts of those who knew her.\nWanda was a woman of deep faith and a master of gentle deeds. She tried to lead by example and was a role model. \nGraduating from the Bronson School of Nursing in 1947\, she was working as an RN when she met the love of her life\, John Boekhout. She was his nurse and he was recovering from a broken back sustained in World War II. This meeting started a life-long love affair. Wanda and John were married on May 8\, 1948. True partners\, their marriage was a loving one\, filled with laughter\, family and music.\nShe was an active member of First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo for over 80 years; singing with John in the choir\, involved with women’s groups and being a part of the whole church family. \nWanda loved her family and friends\, singing\, cats\, golfing\, lemon pie\, traveling and Gun Lake. She was a coupon cutter\, baker of cookies\, bookkeeper to the band\, medic to the neighborhood kids\, a yoga instructor\, and a friend to everyone. She reached out to uplift and inspire and find the good in others. Wanda was a memorable woman who left no memorials except the example of compassion and humor and the fact that she was pleased with life and was thankful for it. She looked for the best in others and gave the best she had. She made a difference. Her life of service didn’t stop with her death. SUMMARY:June 28 Worship Service - Pride Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Scripture is flowing with women who sing. Voicing prayers\, praises\, and pleas. Composing powerful messages about courage\, community\, compassion\, and justice. In Exodus\, Miriam’s song guides the Israelites safely across the sea and through the wilderness\, sealing her eternal legacy as a singing prophet. In the Gospels\, we learn the lyrical story of Mary and Martha\, whose words and wanderings with Jesus point us to a musical message about the roles we hold in creating God’s kingdom and the love we are called to share with the world. Like these grandmothers of the faith\, our own grandmothers shape our beliefs and stir our questions\, teaching us the notes for turning bitter water into sweet refrain. As we worship\, we will remember and re-imagine inherited songs. Come\, let us celebrate the Love of God as we welcome Rebecca Wilson as our preacher and celebrate Pride Sunday.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, July 5 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Americans Make Great Neighbors: Celebrating America’s 250th Anniversary – A 4-Week Sermon Series on Service\, Freedom\, Innovation\, and Diversity: \nWeek 1: Freedom. \nThis series explores what it looks like for followers of Jesus to live as good neighbors in our communities. When neighbor love takes root on the street level\, it strengthens the whole nation one household at a time. Each week explores a neighborly virtue that can strengthen our shared life: serving others\, stewarding freedom\, using creativity for good\, and honoring the diverse people God has made. Grounded in our Wesleyan roots\, we remember that all our outward movements of love are a response to God’s grace and love that comes first to us. Our aim isn’t to coerce or force our ways upon others but to live out Christlike love in the everyday places where we live\, work\, and worship\, to build a vibrant community that is concerned for the well-being of all.

SUMMARY:Sunday July 19 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday\, we celebrate the third week of our Americans Make Great Neighbors worship series. The theme Creating for the Common Good remembers that the God who created the heavens and the earth is still creating\, renewing\, and inspiring life among us. As followers of Jesus\, we are invited to notice the gifts God has placed in our hands: our skills\, ideas\, resources\, imagination\, and compassion. We are called to offer these gifts in service to our neighbors. Grounded in God’s grace and our Wesleyan call to love in action\, we come to worship with holy curiosity. This holy curiosity invites us to use our individual and community creativity to help build a more vibrant community concerned for the well-being of all.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, July 26 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION: “The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part\, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t\, the parts we see and the parts we don’t.” –1 Corinthians 12:25  \nJoin us for worship and the final week of Americans Make Great Neighbors as we celebrate the beauty of God’s diverse family. Through Scripture\, song\, and prayer\, we will reflect on what it means to be many people joined by one Spirit and called to one neighbor-love\, listening with grace\, honoring one another’s gifts\, and pursuing peace together. All are welcome to God’s table and in this community of faith.

SUMMARY:August 2 Worship Service - Communion Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Jacob wrestles an angel. Or was it God? Does it matter? There was an encounter with God in the midst of deep struggle and Jacob walked away with a new name\, and a limp. The limp was proof there had been a wrestling match and he came out of it broken\, yet alive. Such are our encounters with God. We walk away with a new name\, sometimes quite literally but sometimes figuratively speaking. There is newness. We have been changed. We are different. We walk away alive yet broken. The good news is God comes to us. God always comes to us and leaves us transformed. \nWe will have special visitors from Holy Land Christian Solidarity Cooperative.

SUMMARY:August 9th Sunday Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us for worship on Sunday\, August 9\, as we listen for the Divine call of inclusion and respond with our ordinary lives and the gift of grace. Through Romans 10:5–15 and Psalm 85\, we will reflect on the good news that God’s grace is near\, generous\, and meant for all people. This theme invites us to consider what it means not only to welcome others in word\, but to become a community where peace\, mercy\, belonging\, and justice are practiced with intention. As we pray\, sing\, listen\, and respond\, we will ask how God is calling us to carry that inclusive love beyond the walls of worship and into our everyday relationships. Our special offering will support the Pastors’ Discretionary Fund\, which has helped people in our community with diverse and sometimes unexpected needs for decades\, made possible by generous gifts from those who want our church to be compassionately engaged with our neighbors. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, August 16 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Where is God in all of this? This is the question we wrestle with as the saga of Genesis comes to an end. Joseph is reconciled with his brothers and with his father after years apart. The brothers had done a horrible thing\, selling Joseph into slavery\, never knowing if he was dead or alive. And when they were reunited Joseph had become one of incredible power – the power to kill them\, or to enslave them\, and yet Joseph forgave them and welcomed them. Rather than death\, Joseph saw life. God was working through him and his family for a purpose larger than they could imagine\, forcing life and newness through their actions. We cannot always see the bigger picture\, but underneath it all is God’s mercy and justice moving all things towards life and wholeness.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, August 23 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Last week in worship we heard the ending of Joseph’s story. Through all the struggles and deathly experiences of Joseph’s life\, God had been with him – and in the end there was redemption and reconciliation. The Egyptian king\, the Pharaoh\, even respected and honored Joseph’s God. Now many years later a new king has risen who has no memory of Joseph’s God and Joseph’s descendants\, the Hebrew people who have become numerous in Egypt. The pharoah – forgetful of God\, and fearful of the “foreigners\,” forces them into slavery. When powerful political leaders become forgetful of God and fearful of people they create oppressive structures. And God raises up courageous leaders to bring about God’s liberation. In Exodus\, God raises up Moses; but first\, God empowers two Egyptian midwives who refuse to follow the king’s rule\, making way for God’s liberation. Here is the good news\, as with the midwives and with Moses\, God empowers us in the face of harm to bring God’s liberation.

SUMMARY:Sunday\, September 6 Worship Service
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the Feast of Creation and enter the Season of Creation with the theme “Salt + Soil + Seawater.” The Feast of Creation is being added to the lectionary in 2026\, during a time of crisis for the environment and those who depend on it for life\, which is all of us. In a time when caring for God’s creation and seeking justice for those most affected by environmental change is more urgent than ever\, we will gather to praise the Trinitarian God who created\, is creating\, and will create. Through scripture\, prayer\, song\, and rich sensory images from the natural world\, we will give thanks for the gifts of creation and renew our call to faithful stewardship. All are welcome to come worship\, reflect\, and be inspired to care for the world God so lovingly made. Let us celebrate God’s love.

SUMMARY:Rejoice Sunday! Sept. 13\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join us for Rejoice Sunday as we gather around song\, prayer\, Scripture\, and Communion\, continuing our Salt+Seawater+Soil worship series with the theme “God’s Breath.” This week we will return to the wonder of creation and listen for the Spirit of God moving over the waters\, breathing life\, beauty\, order\, mercy\, and joy into all that is. In a world that can feel hurried\, heavy\, or chaotic\, worship invites us to pause and remember that the breath of God is still moving among us\, renewing our spirits\, drawing us into deeper reverence\, and calling us into tender care for the earth and for one another. Whether you come full of joy\, carrying grief\, seeking rest\, or simply needing a place to belong\, there is room for you here. We will celebrate the holy feast of Communion\, give thanks for God’s abundant creation\, and share fellowship after worship with root beer floats as a sweet and joyful sign of community. Come breathe deeply\, come be nourished\, come rejoice.

SUMMARY:September 20 Worship Service - ASP Sunday
DESCRIPTION:We continue the series Salt\, Soil\, Seawater: Creation Justice this week by turning to Psalm 148 which invites us to include all that exists in our praise. All of Creation exists within the relational web of life with God\, and therefore\, our worship is not separate from Creation but an integral part of it. Our praise becomes a declaration of our commitment to kinship with Creation and calls us to join in the cosmic dance of life. We are part of Creation\, not above or separate from it\, and we have a role and responsibility to nurture the sacred web of life. \nOn this Sunday we’ll hear from our Youth Appalachia Service Project Team as they tell the story of their summer mission trip; how their work was a participation in the dance of all creation.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship Service Sept. 27
DESCRIPTION:This Sunday worship brings closure to our series that has celebrated the Feast of Creation in Christ\, a new celebration added to the lectionary of the church worldwide. We listen as the Apostle Paul makes an argument for the presence of Christ in and through all things. “For in Christ we live and move and have our being” says the Apostle. For Christians this is a core belief\, not only for ourselves but for all creation; earth\, sky\, and waters. We see the salt\, water and now soil on our altar reminding us of these truths. Let us be inspired to see the God of creation in and through all things. Join us as the Chancel Singers lift praises to the God of all creation\, and Pastor Matt Weiler preaches a sermon titled\, “The One Who Gives Breath.”

SUMMARY:Oct. 4 Worship Service: World Communion Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Join us for World Communion Sunday as we gather with Christians around the globe at Christ’s table and begin our 2026 generosity campaign\, Our Hearts\, Our Home. Together we will hear the disciples’ prayer\, “Increase our faith\,” and Paul’s encouragement to rekindle the gift of God within us. In worship\, song\, prayer\, story\, and Holy Communion\, we will remember that God has made a home among us through mutual love\, hospitality\, inclusion\, justice\, and shared ministry. Whether you come carrying joy\, weariness\, longing\, gratitude\, or hope\, there is room for you here. Come to the table\, come rekindle faith\, come consider how your generosity helps tend this spiritual home for the year ahead.

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship Service October 11\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:This is the second Sunday of our generosity campaign\, “Our Hearts\, Our Home.” Today with the Prophet Jeremiah we are encouraged to create the fullness of God’s kingdom here in this place where we worship and grow together. With Jesus seek healing and wholeness for all creating the conditions for belonging. With the one who was healed we give thanks for all God has given us. Today we also receive a special presentation of the Gospel from our Milestones Children as a part of our congregation’s “Making Meaning” Grant project. \n“Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers… Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have\, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” ~Hebrews 13:1-2\, 16

SUMMARY:Sunday Worship Service October 18
DESCRIPTION:Today’s worship calls us to look inward and to look outward. We look inward praying for God to strengthen our faith for times of challenge. We look outward praying persistently for God’s justice to reign. This is the work of the church we celebrate today in the midst of this season of generosity\, creating a space at FUMC where faith is nurtured and God’s justice for all creation is proclaimed. First Beats and the Handbell Ensemble fill the liturgy with songs of praise to God who gathers and hears us. \n“Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers… Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have\, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” ~Hebrews 13:1-2\, 16
