SUMMARY:Finding Your Life: Listening Deeply
DESCRIPTION:As we prepare for our 40-day journey of Lent\, we “turn around” (the root meaning of the word “repent”) from the distractions of daily noise and focus our attention on listening in a deeper way. Writer Parker Palmer suggests we must listen “to what our life is telling us”–in other words\, to listen to the deep wisdom God gave to us as a birthright\, connecting to God’s purpose once again. \nAdditional resources: The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience. \nJoin us in person or online for Ash Wednesday worship on Wednesday\, March 2 at 7pm. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices. \n

SUMMARY:First Sunday of Lent: Listening Spaces
DESCRIPTION:Sometimes we just need to get away in order to hear from that “still small voice” within. This quiet voice is an attribute of the Holy Living God\, as Elijah found out when he retreated to a cave where he expected to experience God in big wind and earthquake and fire. What is your “cave?” What place– perhaps a park\, a path\, a rocking chair\, a shoreline– and what practice–such as walking\, journaling\, reading\, or making art–helps you get quiet enough for long enough so you can hear past the chaos and into the depths of your life? This Lent we will quiet things down and heighten our attention to the “still\, small voice” of God and our own true self. Listening through prayer as well as meditation on sacred texts is an ancient Lenten practice. So\, let us come and rest\, come and listen. \nWe will celebrate communion this Sunday. For those joining us for worship online\, please bring bread and juice to your home worship space. \nAdditional resources: The Daily Examen is a technique of prayerful reflection on the events of the day in order to detect God’s presence and discern God’s direction for us. The Examen is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God’s hand at work in our whole experience. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.

SUMMARY:Second Sunday of Lent: Listening to Our Bodies & Finding Our Breath
DESCRIPTION:Come and listen to the sacred text that connects our own aliveness with the breath of God. Together let us “pray without ceasing” as we pay attention to our breathing and believe that breathing is prayer. God blew breath into us at creation\, and we continue to breathe all of creation in and out of our bodies constantly. The early church also believed that breath and Spirit were one in the same. As we sigh\, let us join our breath with the Spirit that beckons us to the deep and promises to join us in spaces of love that work together to believe in a God breathed life for all. Come\, spirit\, come\, and let us rise on your wings. \nFor the March Mission of the Month we will be taking a special Change the World offering this Sunday to help support Sunnyside UMC’s Community Garden. During the service\, those attending in person will be asked to come forward and offer their gifts. If you would like to donate online\, you may do so on our website. \nWorship note: Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday\, March 14 at 2am! Make sure to set your clocks forward one hour.

SUMMARY:Third Sunday of Lent: Willingly Haunted
DESCRIPTION:As part of The Big Deal Weekend\, our weekend built around anti-racist education focused on the intersection of faith and identity\, Bishop David Alan Bard will preach his sermon\, Willingly Haunted\, for our Sunday worship. Bishop Bard is the presiding bishop of the Michigan Conference of The United Methodist Church. Bishop Bard also shepherds the Minnesota Annual Conference as interim bishop until 2022\, and serves as President of the North Central Jurisdiction College of Bishops. In addition\, we are honored to share a new hymn today written for The Big Deal Weekend: ‘Round the River’s Bend with music by Director of Music\, Jacqueline Stilger and lyrics by Jennifer Clark. We will also remember our baptism and commit to the work of anti-racism that frees us for joyful obedience and collective work that might give birth to the flourishing of life for all. Come and experience\, celebrate\, and share God’s love! \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.

SUMMARY:Fourth Sunday of Lent: Finding Your Power\, Listening to Healing
DESCRIPTION:This week in worship we hear the story of an unnamed woman and a man named Jairus. Both are desperate. Jairus has wealth\, and power\, and access. The unnamed woman has none of those things. Both come to Jesus in prayer seeking healing. The woman for herself\, while the man\, Jairus\, for his daughter. As we find ourselves listening to this story now in the fourth week of Lent\, our task is to stand with Jesus and the disciples in the space between these two humans’ suffering and listen to their stories. In listening\, perhaps we’ll hear our own stories as well. Join us as we continue the Lenten journey of listening. \nJoin us in person or online for worship on Sundays at 10am. If you’re joining us in person\, please review our updated Covid practices.
