In the Old Testament, when Moses raised the staff of the serpent any who had been bitten by a venomous snake could gaze on the staff and be healed of the serpent’s poison. It is a strange reference to an obscure story. The point is, those who look to Jesus who was lifted up on a cross, will be healed. The Lent journey involves us, the church, gazing at the cross of Jesus, that we may be made whole on the day of resurrection. It is also the work of the church to raise the cross of Jesus for the healing of the world. On this 4th Sunday of Lent as we also celebrate our congregational value of Justice: Restoration of Equity and Wholeness, we raise the cross knowing, trusting, that Christ died for an unjust world, and that we, the body of Christ, carry the cross in the name of Justice. When a hurting world turns their gaze towards the church, will they see justice and be made whole?
