Be still…
know that I am God
Advent worship in the style of Taizé
This worship tradition is available each year during Advent.
The worship tradition for these Advent services began many years ago in the ecumenical French monastic community called Taizé. It is a quiet service of meditation, reflection, readings and music. The experience finds its true meaning in the active participation of all assembled by focusing and deepening our faith through the power of prayer. Everyone is encouraged to participate as the Spirit moves them, whether that be in song, prayer, quiet meditation or lighting candles. Our lives are often chaotic and our souls respond by being “busy.” Advent is a time of anticipation, waiting, remaining in readiness. As much as we hope to truly enter and keep this season, it is also a time of distraction, further busyness and cultural consumerism.
The Blue Christmas worship is for all, but especially for those who may find rejoicing at this time of year difficult. Those who are hurting or worried may find that the holiday atmosphere brings pain, grief and loneliness. Together we will experience the message of God’s unconditional love which is the true heart of the season. These Taizé-styled times of worship are for the worship of God, but it is also meant to quiet the soul. The quietness does not happen at once, but gradually during the worship. There is repetition in the words of the music, there are many periods of silence, and the readings are read slowly—all so that we may have a deep quiet growth in our hearts. Then we may be still, and be at peace in the presence of God.
